As a young girl, it wasn’t a surprise if you found me prancing around the house wearing something pulled from my mother’s closet. Believe it or not, this still happens. Only now the pieces aren’t being borrowed. She regularly allows me to shop her closet for a few goodies. I truly and sincerely believe that my mother and I are connected in so many ways, something I discovered initially through our mutual love for fashion. I have memories of my mother in slick black feminine skirt suits; always defined with sharp shoulders, highlighted by a smooth silk blouse, and as she always made sure to wear, hosiery, usually in a sheer black, and one pair, I remember in particular, embellished with a tiny bow right at her achilles heel. Sexy. Chic. Classy. Everything I felt a woman should be.
The older I grew and the deeper I dug into my mother’s history, the more I grew nostalgic for the era she grew up in. The 70s was a beautiful time, as were the clothes, specifically those I found my mother wearing in old photos I’d find. The esthetic was original…there was nothing reminiscent about it. I find that fashion today is a major extension of that generation; reminiscent of decades past and longing for originality and quality. What’s been interesting to me is that some of my go to pieces are decades of years old and, unsurprisingly, are becoming trends again…
Paper Heart is an extension of my longing for that era, a place to celebrate what fashion was, is, and is going to be. Thank you for following!
